Frequently Asked Question
We understand that you may have questions before your first visit or during your treatment journey. Below, we've answered some of the most common inquiries to help guide you.
-
What’s the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?Acupuncture is a practice rooted in Classical Chinese Medicine and is based on restoring the body’s natural energy flow (Qi) through specific points along energy meridians. Dry needling, on the other hand, is often used by physiotherapists and other manual therapists and focuses on releasing muscle tension by inserting needles into trigger points. At Virtue Healthcare, we offer Classical Acupuncture, which can addresses both physical symptoms and underlying energetic imbalances. For more detailed information about the differences between acupuncture and dry needling, please visit our blog post.
-
Is acupuncture right for me?Acupuncture is an excellent option for individuals who have tried conventional treatments without success or are looking for a more holistic, natural approach to healing. It is effective for treating specific issues such as back pain, migraines, arthritis, and digestive disorders, as well as for those seeking to improve their overall well-being. Whether you have a diagnosed condition or simply feel unwell without a clear diagnosis, acupuncture can help restore balance in your body.
-
What should I expect during my first acupuncture session?Your first session will begin with a detailed consultation, where we will discuss your medical history, lifestyle, and current symptoms. After this, the acupuncturist will assess your pulse, key diagnostic tool in Chinese medicine. The treatment will involve the insertion of few fine needles at specific points on your body. Sessions typically last between 45 and 60 minutes, and most patients leave feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.
-
How many acupuncture sessions will I need?Weekly Acupuncture Sessions are typical, to begin with, reducing in frequency as your body responds. Typically, noticeable improvements occur within five to six sessions. Occasionally just one or two Acupuncture Sessions are sufficient. However, a great deal depends not only on the seriousness of the problems someone has in combination with the length of time they have had them but also on the person's constitutional strength. A healthy person can have a severe illness and recover quickly, whereas an unhealthy person can have a relatively minor condition that can last for years. Considering the treatment expectations, sufficient review periods will be set aside to look at progress. Please feel free to complete an MYMOP questionnaire to measure the outcomes of the Acupuncture Treatment. To support our patients who require ongoing care, Virtue Healthcare offers discounted treatment packages of 3 or 5 sessions. These packages are designed for those who anticipate needing multiple treatments and provide a cost-effective way to commit to your healing journey
-
Is acupuncture painful? No, acupuncture is generally not painful. The needles used in acupuncture are much finer than hypodermic needles, so most people feel very little during insertion. Some patients may experience a slight tingling or a mild dull ache when the acupuncture point is stimulated, but this sensation typically subsides quickly, leaving most patients feeling relaxed.
-
Is acupuncture safe?Yes, acupuncture is very safe when performed by a properly trained and qualified practitioner. At Virtue Healthcare, we use single-use, sterile needles, and our practitioners are trained to the highest standards. The risk of adverse effects is minimal, especially compared to many medications or invasive procedures.
-
What are the side effects of acupuncture? Most people experience no adverse side effects from acupuncture. However, depending on your health condition and individual circumstances, you may encounter some minor, non-life-threatening side effects. It's common to feel a bit spaced out or drowsy after a session, so it's a good idea to rest and avoid driving or jumping straight into work immediately afterward. The effects of acupuncture often continue for several days following treatment. The most common side effects include: Drowsiness: This occurs in a small number of patients. If you feel drowsy, avoid driving. Minor bleeding or bruising: Occurs in about 3% of treatments. Pain during treatment: Reported in about 1% of treatments. Temporary worsening of symptoms: Less than 3% of patients experience this. Fainting: Some patients, particularly during their first session, may experience fainting

Are the needles used in acupuncture sterile?Yes, at Virtue Healthcare, we prioritise patient safety. We only use single-use, sterile needles for acupuncture treatments. All needles are disposed of after each session to maintain the highest standards of hygiene and safety. Our acupuncturists are trained to the highest level to ensure your treatment is both safe and effective. For additional information, please visit our blog post Eco-friendly Acupuncture
-
Can I be a blood donor after having acupuncture? As acupuncture is not a regulated profession, the blood donor service in the UK does not accept donations from individuals who have had acupuncture within the previous four months. This precaution is due to a minimal risk of hepatitis if proper hygiene procedures are not followed. Rest assured, at Virtue Healthcare, we adhere to strict hygiene standards to minimise any risks during treatment.
-
Should my doctor know that I am planning to have acupuncture?Yes, if you are on prescribed medication, we recommend informing your doctor that you plan to have acupuncture. However, do not stop taking your medication without consulting your GP. It’s also essential to inform your acupuncturist about any medications or supplements you are currently taking. At Virtue Healthcare, we are trained to recognise serious underlying health conditions. If necessary, we will refer you to your GP.
-
Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?Yes, acupuncture is safe during pregnancy when performed by a qualified practitioner. It can help with common pregnancy-related conditions such as morning sickness, back pain, sciatica, and stress. At Virtue Healthcare, we offer specialised acupuncture treatments for pregnant women to ensure both the mother’s and baby’s well-being throughout the pregnancy.
-
Can acupuncture help with depression?Acupuncture may offer a complementary approach to managing depression. While antidepressants are essential for many individuals, their limitations highlight the need for alternative strategies. Acupuncture, rooted in traditional practices, represents a promising holistic option for those looking to enhance their mental well-being alongside conventional methods. To learn more about the Potential of Acupuncture as a Non-Pharmacological Approach for Depression, please visit our blog post.
-
What eco-friendly practices does Virtue Healthcare use in acupuncture? At Virtue Healthcare, we prioritise sustainability in our acupuncture treatments. We use high-grade surgical stainless steel needles, which have a lower environmental impact compared to copper needles that can cause pollution during production. Our needles are sterilised using gamma ray sterilisation, a safe and eco-friendly method that reduces reliance on harmful substances like ethylene oxide. Additionally, our packaging is 100% recyclable and significantly lighter than standard options, while we also utilise bamboo guide tubes, which are fully biodegradable and sourced from responsibly managed forests. What is the difference between osteopathy and physiotherapy? Both osteopathy and physiotherapy focus on musculoskeletal issues, but osteopathy takes a more holistic approach, treating the body as an interconnected system. Osteopaths at Virtue Healthcare use manual techniques to address not just the site of pain but also underlying issues related to body alignment, circulation, and mobility. This makes osteopathy particularly beneficial for treating chronic conditions and promoting overall health.
-
How is osteopathy regulated in the UK and what qualifications do osteopaths have?Osteopathy is recognised as one of the 14 allied health professions in England, alongside physiotherapists, paramedics, podiatrists, prosthetists, and orthotists. Osteopaths prevent, diagnose, and treat a wide range of health problems using manual therapy, exercise, and advice, aiming to promote the best health based on the individual needs of the patient. As a regulated health profession, osteopaths must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). Regulation works in much the same way as it does for medical doctors. To be registered, practitioners must hold recognised qualifications in osteopathy and adhere to the GOsC's standards, which include annual renewal of registration to ensure compliance with insurance, professional development, and health requirements. Osteopaths typically complete a 4 or 5-year honours degree programme with at least 1,000 hours of clinical training
-
Is osteopathy safe?Osteopathy is generally regarded as a safe form of treatment. However, some patients may experience mild to moderate soreness or pain in the treatment area, headache, or fatigue following a session. These side effects usually occur within a few hours and typically resolve on their own within 1 or 2 days. In very rare cases, serious complications have been linked to spinal manipulation. These complications may involve the tearing of an artery wall, leading to a stroke that could result in permanent disability or even death, particularly after manipulation of the neck. At Virtue Healthcare we will clearly explain the potential benefits and risks associated with your treatment, ensuring you are well-informed before proceeding.
-
Does osteopathy hurt?Osteopathy is generally a gentle, non-invasive treatment. While some joint manipulations may cause a mild discomfort or a brief cracking sensation, most patients find osteopathy relaxing. After treatment, you may feel some soreness, similar to what you might experience after a workout, but this should subside within a day or two.
-
Is osteopathy the right treatment for me?Osteopathy is suitable for people of all ages and is effective for treating a wide range of musculoskeletal issues such as back pain, neck pain, joint pain, and sports injuries. Osteopathy focuses on the body’s structure and function, so it is especially beneficial for those suffering from chronic pain, poor posture, or mobility issues. It’s also a great option for those looking for preventative care to maintain musculoskeletal health.
-
What happens during an osteopathy session?During an osteopathy session, your practitioner will use their hands to assess areas of tension, imbalance, and misalignment in your body. Treatment may include gentle manipulation, stretching, massage, and other techniques to improve circulation and restore mobility. Each session is tailored to your specific needs, and you will also receive advice on exercises and postural changes to support your recovery. Sessions typically last between 45 and 60 minutes.
-
How many osteopathy sessions will I need? The number of sessions required depends on the severity and duration of your condition. Acute problems may resolve after just a few treatments, while chronic issues might require a longer course of care. Typically, noticeable improvements occur within five to six sessions. Your osteopath will create a personalised treatment plan and regularly assess your progress to ensure you’re on track to recovery. To support our patients who require ongoing care, Virtue Healthcare offers discounted treatment packages of 3 or 5 sessions. These packages are designed for those who anticipate needing multiple treatments and provide a cost-effective way to commit to your healing journey
-
What conditions can osteopathy help with?Osteopathy is suitable for treating a wide range of conditions, including back pain, neck pain, joint pain, sports injuries, arthritis, and postural issues. It’s also beneficial for improving overall mobility and managing chronic conditions that impact the musculoskeletal system. At Virtue Healthcare, we use gentle and non-invasive techniques to restore balance and functionality to the body.
-
Can my GP refer me to an osteopath?Yes, GPs in the UK can refer patients to osteopaths, particularly for musculoskeletal issues such as back and joint pain. While osteopathy is not a core service provided by the NHS, some NHS organisations may offer osteopathy as part of their services, typically within specific programmes for musculoskeletal problems. However, this varies by locality and is not guaranteed. While you do not need a referral to see an osteopath, a GP's recommendation can support your decision to pursue this type of treatment. Registered osteopaths are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC), ensuring professional standards. Many private health insurance plans also cover osteopathy, so it's worth checking with your provider if you're referred.
