This spiced tea combines the comforting warmth of traditional winter spices with benefits that help soothe and strengthen the body during colder months

Warming Tea Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of water

  • 4 whole cloves

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, sliced (or 1/2 tsp ground ginger)

  • 3 cardamom pods, lightly crushed

  • 4 black peppercorns (or a small pinch of ground black pepper)

  • 1–2 tsp honey, or to taste

Directions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine the water, cloves, cinnamon stick, sliced ginger, cardamom pods, and peppercorns.

  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, then reduce to a simmer. Let it simmer for 10–15 minutes to allow the spices to fully release their flavours.

  3. Remove from heat and strain the tea into your favourite mug. Add honey to taste and stir until dissolved.

  4. Sip and savour your warming spiced tea, ideally with a cosy blanket and a good book!

The Health Benefits of this warming Tea

This spiced tea isn’t just a treat for the senses; it’s also packed with beneficial properties that support wellness during the colder months. Here’s a look at what each ingredient can offer for your health.

-Cloves In TCM, cloves are used to dispel internal cold and promote circulation, particularly in the stomach and spleen, which can ease digestive issues and reduce nausea. From a Western perspective, cloves are rich in antioxidants and have antimicrobial properties, which can help soothe sore throats and boost immunity.

-Cinnamon Cinnamon is valued in TCM for its ability to warm the body, support the kidneys, and stimulate circulation—perfect for keeping hands and feet warm during winter. In Western herbalism, cinnamon is praised for its antioxidant content, anti-inflammatory effects, and potential to help regulate blood sugar levels.

-Ginger As a well-known warming herb in TCM, ginger supports the lungs and stomach, easing symptoms like chills, congestion, and nausea. Western medicine highlights ginger’s digestive benefits and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help relieve respiratory symptoms and boost immune health.

-Cardamom In TCM, cardamom is known to aid digestion and invigorate the stomach, balancing the body’s Qi (vital energy). It’s also thought to enhance overall energy levels. From a Western perspective, cardamom can support digestive health, reduce bloating, and promote relaxation with its soothing aroma.

-Black Pepper Black pepper is used in TCM to stimulate circulation and support digestion. Its warming nature is ideal for alleviating cold symptoms and congestion. Western nutrition recognises black pepper’s anti-inflammatory effects and its ability to enhance nutrient absorption, making it a powerful addition to this tea.

-Honey Honey is valued in TCM for moistening dryness and soothing the lungs, making it ideal for alleviating winter coughs and sore throats. Western herbalism praises honey for its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, making it a perfect, natural sweetener that adds a gentle boost to the immune system.
